About Me

Children’s wellbeing author Linda Cowan has a lifelong passion for emotional wellbeing, kindness, and helping people of all ages navigate life with greater confidence and calm.

As a children’s wellbeing author, Linda creates gentle stories that support emotional growth, resilience, and calm from an early age.

After many years working in the field of mental health, I have stepped back from professional counselling to focus on what has always been close to my heart: writing books that nurture emotional resilience, starting in childhood.

From Counselling to Children’s Stories

My professional background includes a Master’s degree in Counselling and Therapeutic Communication, along with many years of experience working in both private practice and the voluntary sector. Throughout that time, I saw first-hand how early emotional support can shape a child’s confidence, relationships, and sense of safety in the world.

This professional journey now shapes my work as a children’s wellbeing author, using storytelling to support children before emotional struggles take root.

That insight now finds a new expression through storytelling.

Rather than working directly with clients, I now pour my experience, understanding, and compassion into children’s books that gently teach emotional skills in a way children can understand and enjoy.

Children’s Books: The Brave and Calm Series

Written by a children’s wellbeing author, the Brave and Calm series focuses on everyday emotional challenges young children face.

These stories are written especially for young children and the adults who care for them. Each book centres around everyday emotional challenges such as:

  • Worry and anxiety

  • Shyness and making friends

  • Big feelings and emotional overwhelm

  • Kindness, courage, and self-belief

The Brave and Calm series is designed to help children learn that:

  • Feelings are normal

  • Courage grows in small steps

  • Calm can be learned

  • Kindness begins within

The stories are warm, reassuring, and practical — offering gentle language and comforting characters that children can return to again and again.

Other Published Work

Alongside my children’s books, I have previously published several adult titles focused on mental health and personal growth, including Travel Light: A Handbook for Mental Health and other wellbeing resources. These books reflect the same values that underpin my children’s writing: compassion, clarity, and hope.

The Aim of This Website

This website is now home to my work as an author.

Here you’ll find:

  • Information about my children’s books and upcoming releases

  • Insights into the themes behind the Brave and Calm series

  • Resources and reflections for parents, carers, and educators

  • Occasional blog posts on emotional wellbeing, storytelling, and creativity

My hope is that these stories will support meaningful conversations between children and adults, and offer reassurance to little hearts learning how to be brave, calm, and kind in a sometimes overwhelming world.

Why I Write Children’s Wellbeing Books

As a children’s wellbeing author, I believe stories can reach places that advice alone cannot. Children often struggle to explain big feelings, but they can recognise themselves in a character’s experience. Through gentle storytelling, children are given language for emotions, reassurance that they are not alone, and permission to feel exactly as they do.

My aim is not to “teach lessons,” but to create calm, safe stories that open the door to meaningful conversations between children and the adults who care for them. Whether a child is feeling worried, shy, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves, a familiar story can become a steady companion during uncertain moments.

As a children’s wellbeing author, I write with both the child and the adult reader in mind. These books are designed to be read slowly, revisited often, and used as a bridge for empathy, connection, and emotional understanding in everyday family life.

Thank you for being here — and for supporting stories that help children grow emotionally strong, one page at a time.

Warmly,
Linda Cowan
