    INTRODUCTION – CODEPENDENCY TRAITS

As a counsellor, I have worked with hundreds of clients over the years; one recurring theme that continually surfaces in my counselling sessions is the pervasive impact of codependency traits within relationships. Time and again, I’ve witnessed first-hand the detrimental effects of living in toxic environments characterised by codependent patterns.

In the realms of mental health and relationships, the term “codependency traits” encompasses a spectrum of behaviours and characteristics that profoundly impact individuals and their loved ones.  It often stems from difficulty making decisions and a deep-seated focus on others’ needs at their own expense.  Codependency manifests in various ways within family and romantic relationships.  Understanding these traits is crucial for fostering healthier dynamics and promoting a person’s well-being

EXCESSIVE RELIANCE ON OTHERS FOR VALIDATION

At its core, codependency revolves around an individual’s excessive reliance on others for validation and a sense of identity.  This dependency can lead to a myriad of challenges, including neglecting one’s own needs, struggling with asserting boundaries, and experiencing intense anxiety when not in a caregiving role.  Such patterns often emerge from early familial dynamics, where individuals may have been conditioned to prioritise the needs of others above their own.

    SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Codependency is commonly linked to situations involving substance abuse, where one person depends on another for financial support, sustenance, or accommodation.  However, its impact goes beyond this specific scenario.

    EXCESSIVE CARETAKING, CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR

Signs of codependency include a tendency toward excessive caretaking, controlling behaviour, and an obsessive focus on others or external factors rather than ourselves

FIRST STEP TO RECOVERY – recognising codependent personality traits.

Recognising codependent personality traits is the first step toward initiating positive change and embarking on the journey of recovery.  It involves acknowledging the impact of these behaviours on one’s mental health and relationships and taking proactive steps to address them.   This may include seeking support from a therapist or joining a recovery program specifically tailored to codependency.

    TREATMENT

Co-dependency, typically stemming from one’s childhood, is often addressed in treatment by delving into early childhood issues and their connection to current self-destructive behaviour patterns. Treatment encompasses educational sessions, experiential groups, and both individual and group therapy, enabling co-dependents to rediscover themselves and recognise self-defeating behaviours.

Treatment also focuses on helping patients get in touch with feelings that may have been buried during childhood and reconstructing family dynamics. The goal is to allow them to experience their full range of emotions once again.

Codependency treatment typically involves a multifaceted approach that encompasses therapy, support groups, and behavioural interventions.  Therapy allows individuals to explore underlying issues, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and learn to prioritise their own needs.  Support groups like those offered by national organisations like Codependents Anonymous suggest a sense of community and solidarity among individuals navigating similar challenges.

    SETTING NEW BOUNDARIES

Reclaiming one’s life and emotions is central to recovery.  This entails learning to set boundaries, practice self-care, and cultivate stronger self-worth independent of others’ validation.  While the journey towards overcoming codependency may be challenging, it is ultimately empowering and liberating.

    CONCLUSION

In conclusion, recognising and addressing codependency traits is essential for the promotion and emotional well-being of oneself and in relationships.  By acknowledging the impact of these patterns and actively engaging in treatment and resources, individuals can embark on a path towards greater self-awareness, autonomy and fulfilment.  Remember, the rights reserved to prioritise one’s own needs and health are fundamental to leading a balanced and fulfilling life.
